Spiritual Needs of Christian Single Parents
from: Karlie BestlerSingle Christian mothers have spiritual, emotional and physical needs. Yet, polls show they are one of the least likely groups to attend church. Why is that this group who needs spiritual help don't attend church?
Because of money worries, some single mothers need to work several jobs to make ends meet, and many part-time jobs require working weekend hours. Working single mothers simply do not have the time to attend church functions. Between their hours on the job and the time required to keep up the home, working single mothers just do not have enough hours in the week for all their responsibilities.
Other single Christian mothers feel excluded or stigmatized by the church. Single parenting is stressful enough without the added feeling of being judged, so they stay at home. Church stress Christian single mothers needs to be dealt with.
The Scriptures state that believers should care for the poor, the widows and the defenseless. Single mothers are not too far removed. Churches and single parent ministries have a great opportunity to show the love of Jesus in this area.
If you are a single Christian mother struggling with the burdens of life, try to keep these things in mind:
1. Don't be so hard on yourself. Stop feeling guilty. You can't do it all. Give yourself credit for the job you are doing and continue to do your best.
2. Plan a little time just for you to recharge. Even Jesus went into the wilderness to pray for a while alone. Do something that will help you relax and relieve stress. It doesn't have to be anything elaborate. Simple things will often do. Maybe a nice hot bubble bath and a great book or a long walk to reflect on things. Perhaps a call to a trusted friend.
3. Join a singles group fellowship where you can offer encourage to others and be encouraged. Sharing with others in the same circumstances can be very helpful. They will understand what you are going through and might be able to offer helpful ideas and advice.
While many churches are failing to meet the needs of singles and single parents, there are those who have formed local Christian singles support groups and specialized ministries for parents and kids. Find one in your area and make the time to attend.
Fellowship with other singles is a great place to grow spiritually and meet other singles with similar issues. You and your children will be better off for it. You will feel better having friends you can talk to and your spiritual needs met. Your children will benefit because your will be better able to handle life's stresses.
